Neural mechanisms of the chloralose jerk with special reference to its relationship with the spino-bulbo-spinal reflex.

چکیده
It is known that animals anesthetized with chloralose exhibit a generalized jerky muscular contraction in response to various stimuli6). Since this contraction is abolished by acute spinal cord transection, it seems that supraspinal structures may be necessary for its development1,6). With electromyographic observations, there is a late response as well as an early reflex which corresponds with segmental spinal reflex responses1). Recent workers8,9) have investigated the spino-bulbo-spinal (SBS) reflex system, which interconnects spinal and medullary segments. This SBS reflex appeared as a late response, which was abolished by an acute spinal cord transection. It seemed possible that the same neurones involved in the chloralose contraction may be active in the production of the SBS reflex. Therefore, an attempt has been made to analyze the neural mechanisms of the "chloralose jerk "with special reference to its interactions with the SBS reflex in cats.

Somatosensory and acoustic brain stem reflex myoclonus.
A patient with brain stem reflex myoclonus due to a massive midbrain infarct was studied electrophysiologically. Myoclonic jerks were elicited at variable latencies by tapping anywhere on the body or by acoustic stimuli, and mainly involved flexor muscles of upper extremities. The existence of convergence of somatosensory and acoustic inputs in the brain stem was suggested. This myoclonus seeme...
متن کاملA critical review of evidence concerning long-loop reflexes excited by muscle afferents in man.
It is the thesis of this review that the origin of the intercurrent facilitation at 50 to 400 msec in the standard recovery curve of the H reflex, evoked with paired stimuli, is a complex. It is composed importantly of central feedback effects from the conditioning reflex contraction, influences mediated by cutaneous group III afferent nerve fibres excited by the percutaneous stimulus, and with...
متن کاملSynaptic connections to individual tibialis anterior motoneurones in man.
The characteristics of post-synaptic potentials in a single human motoneurone can be derived from the profiles of post-stimulus time histograms (PSTH) of that neurone when it is firing rhythmically. We have used this method to explore the synaptic connections to individual tibialis anterior motoneurones in man. Agonist group 1 volleys produced short latency excitation of 85% of tibialis anterio...
متن کاملThe effect of spinal skin cooling with topical ointment on the recruitment curve parameters of soleus H-reflex
Introduction : There are different applications for cooling in rehabilitation and there is also a controversy in results of applying ice on limb and its effects on motorneurons excitability. Methods : This study was done to determine the effect of applying controlled cooling (rubbing cold ointment with 3°C temperature) on the spinal skin (around T place of S root nerve) on the excitabili...
متن کاملThe thromboxane A2 mimetic U-46619 inhibits somatomotor activity via a vagal reflex from the lung.
Vagal reflexes from the heart and lungs elicit autonomic as well as somatomotor responses. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether the inflammatory mediator thromboxane A2 inhibits the knee-jerk reflex via a vagally mediated reflex from either the heart or the lung. The thromboxane A2 mimetic U-46619 (0.8 ± 0.08 μg/kg) was injected through a catheter placed near the ri...
